The co-founder of Apple has spoken in favour of Bitcoin and has said that he hopes it will serve as a single global currency one day.
Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple Computer Inc., was speaking to CNBC yesterday when he made his comments. The American investor was responding to remarks made by Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and co-founder of payments processing company Square, earlier this year.
In March, Dorsey was reported as saying that ‘the world ultimately will have a single currency, the internet will have a single currency. I personally believe that it will be bitcoin.’
In response Wozniak said:
“I buy into what Jack Dorsey says, not that I necessarily believe it’s going to happen, but because I want it to be that way, that is so pure thinking.”
The Apple co-founder remains a Bitcoin enthusiast, having bought into the cryptocurrency when it was valued at $700. He has since sold all but one of his Bitcoins, claiming that it wasn’t anything to do with reaping a profit, but that the currency’s volatility was something he didn’t want to care about. Cashing out when the digital currency’s price shot up Wozniak would have made a tidy return.
He said:
“Part of my happiness is not to have worries, so I sold it all — just got rid of it — except just enough to still experiment with.”
He also owns two Ether. Yet, while he remains supportive of the cryptocurrency, he has been stung in the past with it. Speaking at the Times’ Global Business Summit in February, Wozniak explained that someone stole seven Bitcoins from him through fraud. He said that someone bought the coins from him online through a credit card and then cancelled the credit card payment.
“It was that easy. And it was from a stolen credit card number so you can never get it back,” he added.
Yet, despite this he remains true to Bitcoin, claiming that it is ‘pure.’
“Bitcoin is mathematically defined, there is a certain quantity of bitcoin, there’s a way it’s distributed… and it’s pure and there’s no human running, there’s no company running and it’s just… growing and growing… and surviving, that to me says something that is natural and nature is more important than all our human conventions.”
