Central Bank of Brazil Accelerates Drex Rollout, Moves Away from Blockchain

-

The Central Bank of Brazil speeds Drex CBDC rollout, shifting to a centralized design while balancing privacy, regulation, and future blockchain use.

The Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) is speeding up the launch of its central bank digital currency (CBDC), known as Drex. The updated timeline aims for a full rollout in 2026. This acceleration comes after the bank faced repeated difficulties in creating privacy solutions that could fully meet Brazil’s strict financial secrecy and security requirements.

Drex CBDC to Launch Without Decentralized Features in 2026

At first, Drex was projected to be running on blockchain technology intensively. The initial vision involved decentralized networks, programmable money, and peer-to-peer lending. These aspects were supposed to enable novel services without conventional intermediaries. But now things have changed with the BCB. Rather, Drex will open as a more centralized system. Many of the partners in the pilot project in the private sector were surprised by this change.

Since July 2023, 16 consortia have tried out how Drex might be used. These involve the tokenized sale of property, trade finance, and cross-border payments. The trials involve such large companies as Microsoft, Chainlink, and Banco Inter. An example is the testing of Chainlink Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) that enables delivery-versus-payment (DvP) and payment-versus-payment (PvP) systems. These operations are being supported by Microsoft through the provision of cloud infrastructure. Although the new plan of Drex downplays the role of blockchain, the partners of this business do not lose hope in the future of blockchain in the tokenized economy of Brazil.

The centralization drive has significant implications. A large number of use cases that were tested in the pilot might now not operate as intended since the new architecture does not have sophisticated programmability. It is also unclear whether Hyperledger Besu, the Ethereum-compatible blockchain platform adopted in 2023, remains the project.

According to Fabio Araujo, who coordinates the Drex project, the new approach was confirmed. He further described that the implementation will occur in two stages. The initial stage, which is going to be implemented next year, will not feature decentralization elements. The second step will start to experiment and optimize blockchain-based aspects.

Brazil Pushes Ahead with Pragmatic CBDC Approach

The BCB says Drex will start simple but evolve. It will also provide features like credit services even without heavy integration of blockchain. The issue of privacy is not straightforward, and the central bank is trying to achieve a balance between the confidentiality of the user on the one hand and regulation on the other.

The switch is occurring in a period when CBDCs are under discussion around the world. Similar projects in certain nations have been halted or slowed by political opposition. Indicatively, the evolution of some CBDCs has been prohibited in the recent U.S. legislature. Although the blockchain enthusiasts might be disillusioned about the centralized base of Drex, the BCB believes that even the pragmatic approach of a solution like lien reconciliation can help to reinforce the financial infrastructure of Brazil. The bank says Pix’s instant payments show that practical innovation drives adoption.

The second-phase pilot application will be available until November 29, 2025. This demonstrates that the BCB does not discontinue its interest in the collaboration of the private sector in the development of the future of the currency.

Drex is an ambitious project as Brazil continues its move forward. It aims to achieve speed, security, and scalability even though the blockchain will be used less. The world will be interested in whether this moderate approach can provide a CBDC that will be able to satisfy the Brazilian needs and act as a role model.
