Authorities said the suspects forced the victim to give cryptocurrency passwords. After gaining access, they made digital asset transfers of about $680,000. The funds were reportedly transferred from the victim’s company account.
However, the suspects did not stop by the crypto transfer. They supposedly took the victim to his company office. There, they lifted 42 kilograms of silver that belonged to the business.
The stolen silver contributed hugely to the total losses in the case. Police estimated that the total value of crypto and silver was over HK$6M. This huge loss of money immediately set off a criminal investigation.
Police Launch Investigation Into False Imprisonment and Extortion
Police officers arrived at the hotel after being informed of the report. However, the suspects were already gone from the location. Authorities confirmed that the four men were gone before officers arrived on the scene.
The victim sustained various physical injuries in the attack. Police said that he had wounds on his face, arms, and calves. Medical help was, however, given after the incident was reported.
The Kowloon City Police District Crime Squad has taken over the case. Detectives are currently going through hotel records and security footage. Investigators are also looking into trails of money transactions relating to the stolen cryptocurrency.
Crypto Security Risks Highlighted by Violent Theft
This case spotlights concerns that are growing around cryptocurrency security. Unlike traditional bank transfers, crypto transactions can be hard to reverse. That is why it is often difficult for victims to recover stolen digital assets.
Furthermore, criminals are increasingly targeting people known to possess significant digital wealth. Face-to-face encounters involving large transactions can be dangerous to your personal life. As a result, law enforcement agencies are cautioning traders to have maximum care when negotiating business.
Hong Kong authorities are continuing to increase regulations on digital asset businesses. However, there are still cases where violent crimes have been associated with cryptocurrency. These incidents demonstrate how digital wealth can attract organized criminal activity.
For the time being, the investigation is an ongoing operation within the Kowloon City Police District. Officials are asking anyone who has information to help with the inquiry. The outcome of the case may also have implications for future discussions about the security risks of cryptocurrency transactions.
