How AI and Blockchain Trace Every Bean from Minas Gerais

-

Coffee beans are tracked from farm to cup using blockchain and AI technology, increasing quality and transparency in a new Minas Gerais project.

Brazil’s future coffee is here, and it’s in southern Minas Gerais. Blockchain and artificial intelligence are now being combined in a radical experiment that follows coffee beans from farm to cup.

The project is called Smart Coffee Flow, with the Instituto Federal de Educacao, Ciencia e Tecnologia do Sul de Minas Gerais (IFSULDEMINAS) and company VMD Estrategia e Inovacao as partners.

It was officially launched on August 28, 2025, and will run for two years. Using this revolutionary technology, this project will shed unprecedented levels of transparency and intelligence on coffee traceability.

How Blockchain Ensures Privacy of Every Bean

Smart Coffee Flow project: DataFlow’s Coffee Flow: Making Supply Chain Transparent. The Coffee Flow project uses blockchain technology to document the coffee-related supply chain. This makes sure that the data on each batch of beans is secure, transparent, and immutable.

Blockchain is effectively helping to get a digital record of information from planting to processing to coffee distribution.

This technology is essential to consumer confidence. From farmers to retailers and consumers, all can trace the origin of the coffee and the methods of its cultivation.

This is beneficial for quality, good practices, and environmental responsibility in a region that is a major coffee-producing state, like southern Minas Gerais.

AI Redesigns Coffee Quality and Efficiency

AI, in addition to blockchain, is capable of precisely and rapidly grading the caliber of coffee. A similar system called CoffeeClass, developed by Embrapa Instrumentation, scans images of coffee on the ground to determine quality in minutes.

This reflects the mission behind the Smart Coffee Flow, which is intelligent AI-powered supply chain management.

The role of AI includes predicting coffee quality, optimizing logistics, and making decisions.

It has the potential to benefit farmers with respect to increasing productivity and market competitiveness. AI and blockchain together spell a wiser, more trusted coffee supply chain.

Global and Local Points of Engagement with Technology

Blockchain technology and digital solutions are becoming increasingly acquainted with the Brazilian coffee business. Previous projects, such as the IBM and Maersk TradeLens platform, have improved efficiency in the shipping of coffee around the world through blockchain.

Additionally, Minasul Cooperative is about to introduce a coffee-backed cryptocurrency to help farmers financially.

The Smart Coffee Flow project is local in content but is following these international impulses. Minas Gerais will be at the forefront of sustainable coffee innovation as a result of this victory, which has the potential to pave the way for a revolution in coffee traceability, certification, and quality control.

Prof. Cleber Avila Barbosa from IFSULDEMINAS stressed that the project is an essential step for smart agriculture.

“Overall, the innovation could bring technology deeply into the entire lifecycle of coffee,” said Andre Moreno Uberti, Partner at VMD Estrategia.
