Unicode to Feature Bitcoin Symbol Soon

Bitcoin has reached another step closer towards acceptance. The Bitcoin symbol will soon be among the likes of $, £ and other mainstream fiat currencies. The Unicode Standard will soon have Bitcoin symbol along with other rest of the characters soon, all thanks the efforts of one of the enthusiastic bitcoin community member.

According to reports, Ken Shirriff submitted a proposal to the Unicode Consortium for inclusion. The proposal states that the Bitcoin symbol which is currently being increasingly used as running text and given the increased usage of the symbol as well as the prominence being gained by bitcoin in fintech sector makes it befitting to be included in Unicode.

The proposal submitted by Ken Shirriff on October 2, 2015 has been accepted exactly after one month of submission. Ken Shirriff shared the information on his twitter account yesterday. It is not the first time Ken has submitted a proposal to Unicode Consortium. the Bitcoin symbol will be the second successful submission by Ken to Unicode.

The Bitcoin symbol on Unicode will be same as the ones that are currently in use — A capital ‘B” with two vertical lies going through it (similar to the dollar symbol). Inclusion of Bitcoin symbol into Unicode can be considered as a step towards global adoption of bitcoin and standardization of Bitcoin symbol. The time when computers will come with Bitcoin symbol on their keyboards is not far.

On the other hand, bitcoin price has been exhibiting a steady upward trend. The price has gone up by over 100 percent since the past one month with the price touching $500 for a while today. The initial increase in price was speculated to be driven by weakening world economy and increased bitcoin transactions on Chinese exchanges. Last month the leading Chinese bitcoin exchange Huobi experienced a record number of transactions in bitcoin exchange history.
