Armada Collective Targets Greek Banks

-

Armada Collective, the cybercriminal group which was responsible for launching massive DDoS attacks on multiple private email service providers including ProtonMail, HushMail and Zoho has now stuck in Greece. According to reports from Greek media, the Greek government, security agencies and Central Bank are on high alert following a threat by Armada Collective.

Armada Collective had allegedly demanded an undisclosed amount in bitcoins as ransom following an attack on the country’s electronic payments system last week. The attack was carried out by hackers on November 26, disrupting the electronic banking services in the region for over an hour. The cybercrime division of Greek police along with Greek intelligence agency were responsible for restoration of services. Following the initial attack, the hackers allegedly sent a ransom note along with a threat to launch attacks on three unnamed banks in the country if their demands were not met by Monday.

Expecting trouble, the cybercrime division of Greek police, Central Bank, Greek intelligence agency and other departments were placed on high alert today. The units were prepared to counter cyberattack on the bank websites, in case the hackers decided to make good on their threats.

The report also mentions a source who spoke to Kathimerini, a leading Greek newspaper that the personal data and account details of banking customers are safe. These threats and attacks come at a wrong time while the banks are still on the road to recovery after the latest financial crisis.

Last week, another bank in the United Arab Emirates was hacked by a hacker who calls himself Hacker Buba. The hacker had asked for $3 million in bitcoins and threated to make all user data and account information public if the ransom is not paid. Hacker Buba has already published the names and account numbers of few customers on twitter.
