Buenos Aires Partners with ZKSync for Blockchain Digital Identities

-

Buenos Aires partners with ZKSync to offer blockchain-based digital identities, empowering 3.6 million residents with enhanced privacy and control.

The City of Buenos Aires has recently announced a partnership with ZKSync, enabling 3.6 million residents to access blockchain technology for their digital identities. This innovative platform allows users to access over 60 essential documents.

The new QuarkID system was developed based on an earlier digital identity project. It is also expected to improve privacy and security through decentralised trust using blockchain. The government has adopted QuarkID into its miBA platform. Buenos Aires is the first city in the world to use blockchain and zero-knowledge-proof cryptography for self-owned digital identities.

Buenos Aires Leads in Digital Identity Management with P2P Verification

From October 2024, all active users of the miBA will be provided with a DID as a decentralized digital identity. These DIDs are stored and secured in QuarkID’s wallet and run on Era, the Layer 2 blockchain built through ZKSync. It is regarded as a major shift in governments’ efforts to adopt blockchain for rebuilding digital services by introducing enhanced privacy standards in identity management.

The Chief of Government of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macri, has stressed this venture. He said that it seeks to market the city as an innovation hub in the global market. With the help of this technology, Buenos Aires is refocusing on how citizens approach their personal data.

Moreover, QuarkID enables different people to store and manage their verified credentials and retrieve them when necessary. Therefore, it minimizes the dangers resulting from centralization. In addition, it allows for P2P verification without sharing more information than one is comfortable with.

Therefore, Buenos Aires is leading the world in how people manage their digital identities. This drive is intended to reduce the threat of identity theft and data loss inherent in the concept of centralised authority. Furthermore, QuarkID is an open source, so the citizens own their data.

By participating in this pioneering project, Buenos Aires strengthens security and confidentiality and becomes an example for other cities. By deploying identity management that gives individuals control over their identities, the city sets the foundation for a future where ownership of personal data is established as a right.
