In late January 2022, Elon Musk and McDonald’s shared a Twitter interaction that led to the creation of an official Grimace Coin. Musk tweeted, “I will eat a happy meal on TV if McDonald’s accepts Dogecoin.” The fast-food chain responded, “Only if Tesla accepts grimace coin.” It didn’t take long before a token called Grimace Coin was added to the Binance Smart Chain, and quickly gained traction from buyers. According to BeInCrypto, the price climbed 6,000% in just a few hours after the Twitter exchange.
Based on information from a McDonald’s manager, the purple mascot Grimace was created to resemble a taste bud. McDonald’s has since told Fortune they are not affiliated with the emergence of the cryptocurrency. Their marketing mascot is now the face of Grimace Coin, a meme coin that’s grown its following to nearly 8k on Twitter by mid-February.
It’s self-proclaimed as the only token where everyone can say, “I’m loving it.” The mascot has continued to gain popularity in recent weeks and even made a debut in the Golden Arches new commercial. On SuperBowl Sunday, McDonald’s aired a commercial starring celebrity Kanye West, bringing back the Grimace mascot after a long-forgotten hiatus.
Grimace Coin NFTs Sold out Like Hotcakes
The Official Grimace Coin minting went live on February 12th, selling over 25% of their total supply in under twelve minutes. After 7 hours and 20 minutes, Grimace Coin sold out a total of 1,000 NFTs for 0.3 BNB each. According to the official site, NFT holders got rewarded in BNB with 10% of the minting revenue, while 20% of the minting revenue is donated to the Ronald McDonald charity.
Grimace Coin is joining the metaverse with emerging NFT gaming technology, as they continue to grow their community. According to information from their Telegram, Grimace Coin is now developing the metaverse full time. They are adding a popular play-to-earn (P2E) feature, where players can earn Grimace Coins from activities within the Sandbox game.
This allows players to earn specialty NFT’s for playing the game and reaching set milestones. NFT holders will receive various game benefits for their coin ownership. Every NFT holder will be gifted a car within the game and the freedom to sell the car to players in the marketplace. NFT owners will receive private access to VIP areas in the game. The office launch date of the Grimace Metaverse has yet to be announced.

Alongside their metaverse development, Grimace Coin is proceeding with a CertiK audit of their protocol on the Binance Smart Chain. CertiK is a blockchain security network that uses Formal Verification technology on smart contracts. In 2020, CertiK completed 220+ audits on over 118k+ lines of code. In three years they secured $8.03B of value and the numbers continue to grow exponentially. The Grimace Coin audit is in progress and estimated to be completed soon.
