On December 21, 2024, Spacecoin is excited to announce the launch of its very first satellite, CTC-0. It is an event that begins the route towards universal internet access by developing a decentralized space-based service. Spacecoin plans to bring cheap, open-source internet services to underserved areas in the world’s emerging markets using low-earth orbit satellites and the blockchain.
SpaceX will launch CTC-0 from Vandenberg Space Force Base aboard its Falcon 9 rocket. This launch is part of the Bandwagon-2 rideshare mission. The mission shall be a critical step for bringing the promise of the internet. That is to say, open and unconditional access, to those whom the digital revolution has ignored.
Spacecoin’s Satellite Internet to Innovative Features
One feature that distinguishes the use of 5G NTN technology for Spacecoin is the possibility of using direct-to-device connectivity. This allows bypassing expensive ground-based infrastructures like fiber-optic cables and cellphone towers. This innovation will enable users in remote regions to connect to the internet through their mobile devices. They will no longer need to rely on traditional telecom providers.
This network is decentralized in nature. There is going to be no centralized authority controlling or censoring access due to the blockchain-based Spacechain protocol that drives this powered network, thus power back to the users.
The other factor that the project is interested in is affordability. Since the cost of satellite-based infrastructure has come down so much, the user in emerging markets would have to pay as little as US$1-2 a month for internet access.
The network of Spacecoin will also be fully industry standard compliant. It will ensure full compatibility with the latest 5G NTN-enabled mobile devices of the biggest manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung. The project will open-source its technology stack, fostering collaboration and innovation within the industry.
