- Inquiry may shape future UK banking policies for regulated crypto companies.
The UK Parliament has launched a cross-party inquiry into claims that banks are limiting access to financial services for cryptocurrency businesses. Lawmakers will examine reports of account closures, banking restrictions, and payment limits affecting digital asset firms.Â
The review comes as the United Kingdom advances its broader crypto regulatory framework and seeks to strengthen its position as a global digital asset hub.
Parliament Seeks Evidence on Banking Restrictions
The UK Crypto and Digital Assets All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) has opened an inquiry into banking access for cryptocurrency businesses across the country. The cross-party initiative will investigate whether banks are creating unnecessary barriers for legitimate digital asset companies.
The review will examine reports that crypto firms struggle opening business accounts and maintaining existing banking relationships across the United Kingdom today. Lawmakers will also assess restrictions placed on crypto-related payments by banks serving retail customers and businesses across domestic markets.

The APPG has invited written submissions from banks, fintech companies, payment providers, crypto firms, and other interested stakeholders during six weeks. The consultation period runs from July 21 through August 31 before lawmakers prepare recommendations for the UK government afterward.
Lord Vaizey of Didcot and Labour MP Gurinder Singh Josan CBE are leading the parliamentary inquiry through the APPG. They said access to banking remains essential for legitimate businesses operating within the country’s regulated financial system and economy.
Lawmakers will determine whether existing banking practices reflect appropriate risk management or create unnecessary obstacles for competition and financial innovation today.Â
The investigation will also assess whether current restrictions affect consumers alongside businesses providing digital asset products and related professional services.
Inquiry Supports Wider UK Digital Asset Strategy

The banking review arrives as Britain continues implementing policies supporting cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and tokenized financial markets through updated regulatory frameworks nationwide. Officials recently introduced a comprehensive crypto framework that is scheduled to take effect during October 2027 across regulated digital asset activities.
The parliamentary group will compare Britain’s approach with international practices adopted across the United States, European Union, Hong Kong, and Australia markets. Those comparisons may help lawmakers identify policies balancing financial stability with innovation while protecting consumers and encouraging responsible market growth.
Industry participants have argued for years that limited banking access slows investment and complicates normal business operations for regulated crypto companies.Â
Some firms also claim banks have imposed payment limits or closed accounts despite businesses complying with applicable legal requirements.
Although the APPG cannot introduce binding legislation, its findings could influence future discussions between policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, and industry representatives. The final report is expected to outline practical recommendations supporting fair banking access while maintaining appropriate safeguards against financial crime.
