Ukrainian Officials Receive Blockchain Crime Investigation Training

-

Ukrainian officials received blockchain investigation training from OSCE, learning to trace crypto crimes and analyze transactions using real-time tools.

From November 20 to 22, twelve officials from the National Securities and Stock Market Commission of Ukraine participated in a specialized online training. The course focused on investigations involving crypto-assets. The OSCE Office of the Co-ordinator of Economic and Environmental Activities (OCEEA) organized the training. The objectives were to provide the participants with the necessary information on blockchain and the possibility of using it for tracing crimes linked to crypto-assets.

This session included such topics as introducing the basics of blockchain technology. They also got to know various kinds of crypto-assets and how they work. Further, the training also taught about real-world tools for analyzing the transactions taking place on the blockchain. The attendees were also trained on how to use both commercial and open source blockchain analytic tools. These tools assist in mapping out the movement of the crypto-assets and in the identification of any unlawful activities.

The training included involvement activities as one of the elements. Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) were used, and participants followed transactions in real time. This kind of training allowed them to identify such patterns and practice newly acquired knowledge on the spot.

Ukrainian Officials Train to Address Crypto-Based Criminal Activities

This session is part of a broader process by which the OSCE seeks to help its member states. The purpose is to address the hazards of Virtual assets, especially in combating money laundering and other related crimes. Cryptocurrencies are on the rise, and so is their involvement in illicit businesses. This has made it necessary for member states to enhance their investigative approaches.

Maxim Mishalov Dragunov of OCEEA pointed out that crime rates are increasing in blockchain systems. He noted that although cash is currently used in the commission of many crimes, cryptocurrency has a unique feature. It can be done without the constraints of borders and in an instant hence minimizing chances of controls put in place by authorities detect cross border illegitimate transactions.

The training is offered under an OSCE project funded by Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The project aims to strengthen national capacities to address the criminal threats of virtual assets. By doing so, the OSCE aims to enhance the capacity of member states to investigate crypto-based crimes effectively.

Finally, the training provided information on how to investigate crypto-assets. This served the purpose of enhancing the abilities of Ukrainian authorities to fight against crypto criminal activities. As the crypto landscape evolves, similar training will be key to staying ahead of new challenges.
