In Operation Hawala, the Federal Police of Brazil dismantle a $1 billion crypto laundering system associated with smuggling and tax evasion.
September 2nd, Tuesday morning, marked the beginning of Operation Hawala, which was initiated by the Federal Police. This was done to eliminate a criminal network that dealt with money laundering.
Smuggling, tax evasion, and currency evasion were also subject to a crackdown during this time period. In Araacatuba and in Sao Paulo, search and seizure warrants were carried out. Six cell phones, luxury cars, and guns were confiscated by the police officers.
Others were drones and electronic products. One of them was caught and taken to the Federal Police station at Aaracatuba.
The Federal Court of São Paulo took possession of the suspects’ assets and bank accounts, and this action was followed by freezing them. The court order shows how serious the crimes are. The case is of high priority to officials.
Criminal Network Transferred More than $1 Billion of Crypto
The investigation started over two years ago. Police discovered shell companies and millions of bogus partners. These borders allowed the illegal entry of electronics and high-end commodities.
The products were being marketed through a big online retail store. It was because of this that the origin of the merchandise was also concealed. The plan was generating substantial profits in a speedy and stealthy manner.
One of the companies involved in the network transferred more than R$1 billion within a little more than a year.
Such funds were spread in different cryptocurrency exchanges. As a result of the ruse, the money trail became extremely difficult to track.
According to officials, the cryptocurrencies enabled the group to conceal their illicit funds successfully. Cracking such schemes was underlined by the Federal Police.
They also cautioned that digital currencies are still used as a means to launder money.
The suspects are charged with criminal association, embezzlement, evasion of tax, evasion of currency, and money laundering. These are punishable offences in the criminal code of Brazil.
This case throws light on the increasing danger of crypto-based offenses. It reveals the manner in which digital finance is being exploited by criminals with little regulation. Police are still keeping up with technology.
