- Base and Coinbase plan tokenized stocks backed 1:1 by real company shares.
- Robinhood leads EVM tokenized equities, but Base targets direct ownership benefits.
- Regulatory clarity and product details remain key before the planned launch proceeds.
Base is preparing to enter the tokenized equities market with Coinbase through a planned product backed 1:1 by real company shares. The announcement follows Robinhood Chain’s early push into on-chain stock trading and signals stronger competition in tokenized real-world assets. However, both companies have yet to confirm a launch date, supported assets, or the product’s regulatory framework.
Base Plans Directly Backed Tokenized Equities
Base developer Jesse Pollak said the Ethereum layer-2 network is working with Coinbase on tokenized stocks backed 1:1 by underlying shares. He shared the update in a post on X on July 21, while acknowledging Robinhood had moved faster into tokenized equities.
Pollak said Robinhood successfully introduced stock-linked assets within an Ethereum Virtual Machine environment before Base entered the market. However, he added that Base and Coinbase are close to launching an alternative designed around direct asset backing.
According to Pollak, the proposed structure differs from Robinhood’s current stock token model because every token would represent a corresponding underlying share. He argued this approach could improve trust, capital efficiency, and institutional acceptance if successfully implemented.
Despite those comments, Base and Coinbase have not released technical documentation explaining custody arrangements, issuance processes, or settlement mechanisms. They also have not identified the initial stocks expected to become available through the planned service.
Coinbase previously announced plans to introduce one-to-one backed tokenized stocks for eligible non-U.S. customers. The company said those assets would represent equity ownership while supporting shareholder rights and dividend distributions where applicable.
Pollak’s latest statement connects that earlier initiative with Base, although the companies have not confirmed whether both offerings will share identical structures.
one thing robinhood chain has done right is have tokenized equities in an EVM environment.
we've been behind on this on @base and i'm frustrated that's the case. but we're close to fixing it with @coinbase. and when we do, we'll have 1:1 backed equities (vs. robinhood's…

Tokenized Stock Competition Continues to Expand

Robinhood launched Robinhood Chain earlier this month with tokenized stock products targeting European users under an existing regulatory framework. Those tokens provide market exposure instead of direct ownership of underlying company shares.
Base now appears determined to compete by emphasizing ownership-backed digital securities rather than derivative-based instruments.Â
Even so, investors must wait for additional disclosures before comparing both products fairly.
The announcement also reflects growing interest in tokenized real-world assets across the digital asset industry. Tokenized equities remain smaller than other blockchain-based assets, yet competition continues increasing as more platforms enter the sector.
Several companies, including Backpack and xStocks, have also introduced tokenized equity products with different ownership and custody structures. Meanwhile, exchanges increasingly view tokenized securities as an opportunity to extend trading access beyond traditional market hours.
Regulatory considerations remain important because tokenized shares generally fall under existing securities laws regardless of their blockchain format. Consequently, future product launches will depend on compliance requirements across different jurisdictions.
For now, Base has outlined its direction without revealing final product specifications. Investors will likely watch closely for details covering transferability, custody, shareholder rights, supported markets, and launch timelines before evaluating the offering.
