BlackRock and Ondo Finance launch tokenized ETF portfolios for non-U.S. investors, bringing onchain model portfolios to global crypto markets.

BlackRock and Ondo Finance have launched a new product called Ondo Intelligent Portfolios today. It is the first time BlackRock’s customized ETF portfolio strategies have been brought onchain.

According to WSJ, the portfolios are offered to qualified investors outside of the United States. One transferable token on the blockchain represents each strategy. This token is available for investors to access on major crypto wallets and DeFi applications.

How the Tokenized Portfolios Actually Work

A long-term wealth-building strategy usually involves a diversified portfolio of assets. In doing this well, one must constantly make judgments, conduct research, and use consistent effort in the management of the portfolio.

Typically, investors are required to select the appropriate assets and the right proportions. They also have to rebalance holdings, control tax exposure, and time trades.

The Ondo Intelligent Portfolios were created just to eliminate this constant burden completely. One token provides users with immediate access to a professional strategy.

The system is based on three levels of automation. First, a partner such as BlackRock provides a clear portfolio allocation approach.

Second, Ondo adopts that model with tokenized stocks and ETFs. Real securities underpin these in real markets.

Smart contracts include rebalancing logic, allocation logic, and fee logic. This programmatic approach eliminates emotional human decision-making from the whole process.

Third, investors only hold and manage one token. They can mint or redeem it to fine-tune exposure on the fly.

Key Features Built Into the New Product

There are a number of benefits associated with the tokens that are directly related to blockchain technology. They may be traded around the clock, every day.

Investors can also move these tokens peer-to-peer without the need for any intermediaries. The tokens can also be used as collateral for borrowing.

All the holdings in the portfolio and any planned rebalancing are visible on the blockchain. This is a setup that provides investors with immediate visibility into their actual portfolio.

However, the present structure does have one interesting drawback for users. Since it is run via custodial facilities outside the USA, investors do not have direct shareholder voting rights.

They continue to be fully exposed to all underlying assets held. They have no right to vote on the specific actions or decisions of individual shareholders.

What This Launch Means for Crypto Markets

This is part of a much larger trend that is playing out in Wall Street today. Institutional momentum and interest in real-world asset tokenization is growing.

BlackRock is the world’s largest asset manager by total assets. Its direct involvement signals growing institutional confidence in blockchain-based financial products.

Ondo Finance focuses on traditional financial products that are brought onto the blockchain. This is a new collaboration that gives it a much broader footprint in the area of active portfolio management.

The two firms are combining traditional investment structures and blockchain technology. Together, they are focused on a mix of professional strategy, digital liquidity, and automation.

Currently, this product is only available for non-U.S. investors. There remains uncertainty about when and if U.S. investors will be able to follow suit.

Lastly, this move could push more asset managers toward similar tokenized products. It also strengthens the broader case for DeFi as mainstream finance.
