Boundless Ends ZK Proving as ZKC Becomes an AI Access Coin

Boundless pauses ZK proving while ZKC stake converts into AI model credits

The Boundless Foundation will stop taking new zero-knowledge proof requests on November 5, 2026, and rewrite what ZKC is for. In a November 3 Foundation post, the Boundless ZKC AI Access Coin plan is simple. Stake ZKC, keep it locked, and from January 2, 2027, claim recurring credits for open-weight models on Boundless AI instead of new token rewards.

That is a product retirement and a utility rewrite in one calendar. The proving network that once sold ZK capacity pauses indefinitely. The same staking contract stays. The payout changes from minted ZKC to metered model access.

How the Boundless ZKC AI Access Coin Plan Works

Tokenized AI inference, as Boundless describes it, does not require a new deposit. Holders keep ZKC in the existing stake. They link that wallet to a Boundless AI account by signing a message. Then they receive a pro-rata share of a shared credit pool every two days. Staked ZKC is not spent when credits are used.

The initial pool is about $1,000 of AI credits per allocation window. A wallet that holds 1% of total staked ZKC would receive about 1% of that pool. Credits expire when the next window opens, so unused balance does not stack. The Foundation says credits are nontransferable and have no cash value. Treat pool size, refresh timing, and model menus as project parameters that can change with capacity and cost.

The supply path flips with the reward path. Proving rewards stop first. Staking rewards run through one final epoch that ends January 1, 2027. After that epoch settles, the Foundation says no new ZKC will be minted. The circulating total becomes a fixed supply at the last verified on-chain amount. AI credits are scheduled to start the next day, so staking keeps a payout without growing the token float.

The Shutdown Calendar

The Foundation's dates are concrete:

  1. November 5, 2026: New proof requests end. Outstanding proving rewards must be claimed before that cutoff.
  2. November 30, 2026: The Explorer interface goes offline. Staking is supposed to move to a standalone UI with instructions published beforehand. The 30-day withdrawal period on the existing contract stays.
  3. January 1, 2027: Final staking-reward period ends; minting of new ZKC stops once that settlement clears.
  4. January 2, 2027: Tokenized inference launches for eligible stakers on Boundless AI.

An earlier Foundation brief had already flagged the November 5 proving pause and the Explorer retirement. The November 3 post adds the credit math, the fixed-supply promise, and the January 2027 start. Protocol source code, the Foundation says, remains public even while proving operations sit idle.

Why This Matters for AI and Blockchain Readers

Most crypto staking still pays more of the same token. Boundless is trying the other bet: hold a stake, receive inference you would otherwise buy by the token from a cloud bill. That sits next to other AI and blockchain experiments that turn locked capital into compute claims rather than more token yield. One parallel is 0G's path from staked assets into AI compute credits.

The chain job here is narrow. It accounts for who is staked and in what share. Boundless AI's job is delivery: open-weight models through its platform, API, and integrations such as Vercel's AI Gateway. Linking a wallet does not prove a model answer was correct, safe, or useful. It only proves the Foundation accepted a stake-linked claim on a credit pool.

The catch is in the numbers and the obligation. Roughly $1,000 every two days, split across all eligible stake, is a small shared faucet, not a personal compute stipend. Credits only hold if Boundless AI keeps serving models. That is an operating cost, not a cryptographic guarantee. Proving demand that depended on Boundless as a live prover network loses that path on November 5. ZKC holders who wanted proof rewards now hold a claim on AI access under Foundation terms that are still filling in eligibility, supported models, and the exact final supply figure.

The mental model to keep is simple. Boundless is retiring the ZK proving product and renaming the economic job of ZKC around tokenized inference. Follow the calendar. Claim proof rewards before November 5. Watch the Explorer exit on November 30. Then ask on January 2 whether a share of a small, expiring credit pool is enough to make an "AI Access Coin" mean usable model time rather than a rebranded stake.
