A lot of companies show an interest in Bitcoin mining. This is only normal, as it is one of the many booming industries around the world right now. Intel has apparently applied for a patent pertaining to BTC mining. They are not the first company to do so, although it remains a bit unclear what they aim to do exactly. With Samsung getting involved in ASIC miners as well, an interesting future lies ahead.
There’s a lot of excitement and confusion over Intel’s Bitcoin mining patent. Originally disclosed in late March, it is evident the tech giant eyes a Bitcoin mining hardware accelerator .In layman’s terms, this seemingly indicates the firm is working on ASIC chips. That is not entirely surprising, as Samsung has made a similar move not that long ago.
Intel Wants in on the Bitcoin Mining Action
Although a Bitcoin mining hardware accelerator can mean many different things, the patent filing is pretty clear. It is a system on a chip including a processor core and hardware accelerator. This unit will be used specifically to mine cryptocurrency, which can only be a good sign. Patenting such hardware is not entirely unsurprising either Every manufacturer wants to protect its proprietary technology through such a filing.
With Intel showing an interest in Bitcoin mining, the future got a lot more exciting. It is still unclear how and when this hardware will be built. Nor is there any indication of potentially commercializing this technology. It is possible Intel will set up its own mining operation, rather than sell hardware to clients. There are still a lot of unknown factors to contend with in this regard.
More competition in the Bitcoin mining hardware industry is a good thing. Right now, the space is primarily dominated by Bitmain when it comes to consumer-oriented products. BitFury also plays a big role, although they are not selling products to clients anymore. If this venture by Intel is successful, the Bitcoin mining landscape may look very different a few years from today. Whether that is a good or not, is a different matter entirely.
