US spot Bitcoin ETFs added 79,800 BTC worth about $6.2 billion in Q3 2026, per 21Shares' Q3 Bitcoin Market Report. Public Bitcoin treasury companies cut combined purchases from $7.1 billion in Q2 to roughly $1 billion. The funds flipped from $4.8 billion in Q2 net outflows. They became the main institutional bid while Bitcoin rose 42.7% and closed September at $83,570.

US Spot Bitcoin ETFs Lead Q3 Institutional Demand

21Shares said the US spot Bitcoin ETF complex took in 79,800 BTC in Q3. Newly mined supply totaled 41,300 BTC, worth about $2.9 billion. ETF buys therefore ran nearly twice new issuance over the same period.

That print marks a hard reversal from Q2, when the same funds logged $4.8 billion in net outflows. Among the two institutional buyer groups 21Shares tracks, ETFs supplied the larger share of demand once flows turned positive again.

The buying was not steady. August 17-27 and September 21-25 accounted for 91% of the quarter's Bitcoin-denominated inflows. Most of the Q3 bid arrived in two short windows, not a smooth drip across the quarter. Recent daily ledgers already show how lumpy those prints can be. IBIT-led weekly inflows sit next to sharp one-week bleed episodes.

Public Bitcoin Treasury Buys Fall to About $1 Billion

Public Bitcoin treasury companies moved the other way. Combined purchases fell from $7.1 billion in Q2 to roughly $1 billion in Q3, according to the report.

Strategy added only 1,700 BTC, worth about $240 million. Its filings also showed $349 million in sales during July and August. The corporate treasury bid that dominated earlier quarters thinned just as ETF desks returned.

Together, US spot ETFs and public treasury companies still added about $7.2 billion of Bitcoin in Q3. That equaled 2.4 times the value of newly mined supply. In Q2, their combined buys covered only 0.8 times new issuance. The combined institutional stack grew, but almost all of the lift came from the ETF sleeve.

Long-Term Holders Sold More Than ETFs Bought

Stronger ETF demand did not absorb the full seller set. Glassnode said long-term holders cut balances by 248,000 BTC in Q3, valued at about $17.4 billion. That is nearly three times the Bitcoin US spot ETFs acquired.

Long-term holders are wallets that have held coins for more than 155 days. Their Q3 sales followed accumulation after Bitcoin's October 10, 2025 crash. Between November 2025 and June 2026, that cohort added roughly $31 billion of Bitcoin. ETFs logged $7.6 billion in outflows over the same stretch.

The Q3 rally also let sellers bank gains. Glassnode recorded $9.3 billion in net realized gains, the first quarterly net gain of 2026. First-half losses still left the combined Q2 and Q3 figure at a $12.3 billion net loss.

The stake is who owns the bid. ETFs bought more than new supply and outpaced corporate treasuries. Yet long-term holders sold a larger stack into the same rally. Flow watchers now track whether the concentrated August and September ETF windows repeat. Treasury and holder supply may still cap the next upside move.
